RTB’s origin story
Richard the Brave has been a full-time company since 2013. Before then, we both worked in rather different fields.
In fact, Story’s taught over 20,000 (!) personal music lessons. She’s still teaching music, too: you can find her alter-ego at naturalgrowth.ca.
Richard, meanwhile, spent nearly a decade in management roles before moving to Richard the Brave full-time in 2013.
Of course, that doesn’t mean we started in 2013...

The early days
Richard has done freelance work since the mid-2000s, around the time he graduated from design school.
Story was always a regular contributor (and critic) on those early school design projects. Soon we started taking on freelance website and design projects together.
And as we logged more hours collaborating together, we started to see that our work was making a difference.
Clients said that working with us was easy. We were approachable, and communicative.
Looking back, it was probably that friendly, easy-going-but-serious approach that helped us stand apart. More than the design skills, our clients appreciated our attitude.
Those years of freelancing were tiring, but the work was satisfying.

Eventually, however, we knew we had to go all-in. We had to get off the ‘Highway of Stability’ to merge onto the bumpy, gravel-strewn ‘Path to our Dreams’.
We parachuted out of our stable jobs and dove head-first into the unknown. Richard the Brave launched as a full-time company in March 2013.
Fortunately, the community welcomed us – and our work. We feel very fortunate that we’ve been able to continue doing what we love ever since.
And it’s all thanks to a little bravery – and to wonderful people like you.
